This week, I’ve got a great variety of both new uploads and suggestions that are sure to give you that 4am-why-am-I-watching-this-trash feeling. First up is a gyroplane flight demonstration from a prototype that never made it to market, then some talk on Operations Security in a post 9/11 world. After that, we’ve got an hour of programming that would fit right in on the History Channel in the early hours of the morning around the turn of the millennium, as well as two paid-programming style pharmaceutical videos.
And please be sure to stick around until the end to check out some suggestions this week! I’ve curated a handful of videos that slide right into this vibe quite well and I hope you’ll check those out too! Let’s get right into the tapes!
Hawk 4 Gyroplane Flight Demonstration
1997 | Runtime 4 minutes
The Groen Hawk 4 was a single engine, pusher configuration, four seat autogyro built in the United States in the late 1990s. Three prototypes, two piston engined and one turboprop powered, were flown but the Hawk did not go into production.
IOSS Awareness Volume 3:
A Security, Counterintelligence, and OPSEC Update
2004 | Runtime 60 Minutes
"Special Report"
1st Place 2003 National OPSEC Award for Multimedia (Electronic)
In 2002, the Commander for the 190th Air Refueling Wing, Kansas Air National Guard, tasked a few select members of the unit to create a presentation illustrating the importance of OPSEC. The project itself was a test of OPSEC as the Commander directed that it be developed without the knowledge of other 190th personnel. The OPSEC team developed, wrote and produced this series of vignettes depicting unit members in everyday activities in seemingly harmless conversation. The video unfolds in a predictable manner until a "Special Report" newsbreak occurs. Even for the prepared, the consequences of poor OPSEC are vividly demonstrated.
"Looking At It From A Different Angle"
The National Nuclear Security Administration Nevada Site Office OPSEC Team created this awareness video to illustrate where and how seemingly insignificant information is collected, analyzed and integrated to reveal valuable conclusions. It is based on the idea that employees often see their work and environment in black and white with little clarity, while the adversary views the same scenes clearly and in full color. Using OPSEC awareness and low-cost counter- measures, these views can be reversed. When indicators are eliminated, the adversary sees the scene without clarity, collection is low, and the OPSEC process is successful.
"Personnel Security: Foreign Contacts"
Are you charged with safeguarding sensitive or classified information? If so, it is both an honor and a privilege which allows you to make a special contribution to your country. But that carries with it certain obligations. One is to report to your corporate or organizational security officer those behaviors, incidents or events that might in some way affect national security and your ability or that of your co-workers to function positively and effectively in a national security environment. This video, produced by the National Reconnaissance Office, depicts two types of foreign contact that need to be reported.
"It Doesn't Pay to Advertise"
Practice OPSEC at work, at home and while on vacation! This features an employee preparing to go on vacation for the holidays and follows him humorously through many personal and professional OPSEC blunders. The National Nuclear Security Administration Nevada Site Office OPSEC Team produced this entertaining reminder on fundamental OPSEC practices.
Scandals in the White House
1998 | Runtime 57 minutes
When there is a scandal in the White House, the media feeding frenzy begins. Though the public is shocked about the latest scandal involving Bill Clinton, Scandals in the White House are as old as the White House itself. Few United States' Presidents have been beyond reproach.
In Balance In Control:
Understanding Your Diabetes PART 1
1988 | Runtime 15 Minutes
In Balance In Control is an award-winning videotape series developed by Boehringer Mannheim Corporation to help people with diabetes live healthy, quality lives. Prepared with the consultation of dozens of leading experts in diabetes education, the series presents practical information in an easy-to-learn form that you can use... to gain peace of mind in knowing that your diabetes is being properly managed.
"Understanding Your Diabetes," the first program in the series, introduces the concept of diabetes management and shows how balance can be used to bring blood sugar under control. In plain language, it explains what diabetes mellitus is, the impact of meal plans, medication, and exercise on blood glucose control, and the importance of self blood glucose monitoring.
Gotta say that this one was a little disappointing. After the wonderful surprise Feeling Fine: Back Pain Relief was in my previous Virtual Channel Surfing article, with it’s classic 80s watercolor / geometric cover, I had high hopes for Understanding Your Diabetes Part 1. With some great, cheesy reenactments and some calming midi music, this isn’t a total bust, just not what I expected.
INOVA: The Heart Of A Woman

This informative VHS includes what every woman should know about maintaining a healthy heart, the latest advances in cardiovascular diagnosis and treatments, and the future of cardiovascular medicine at the Inova Heart And Vascular Institute - one of the best cardiovascular programs in the nation.
Suggestions!
Kamen Rider ZO
Oddity Archive: Episode 263 – American Forces Network (AFN) TV Ephemera
The OA celebrates Memorial Day with some genuine WTF from the AFN (AFRTS). Presented on the DL of course, ‘cause we gotta think OPSEC.
Cruising The River Shannon, Ireland 1981
An RTÉ News report broadcast on 16 April 1981. The reporter is Peter McNiff.
Cruises on the Shannon are popular but greater number of visitors are needed to develop tourism in the region. For many years, the tourist board has been attempting to attract more visitors to the region along the River Shannon. Waterways like this in any other country would be busy with boats but not the River Shannon. The Shannon flows quietly on through locks and tributaries to the sea. While numbers cruising along the River Shannon increased slightly last year, many companies are struggling to survive. It costs just 17 pence to take a boat through swing bridges and canal locks, a price that has not changed for many years. The lock keeper believes that 17 pence might be a potential attraction to tourists but is a ridiculous sum of money to swing a bridge for. He believes that people would not object to paying a pound considering the facilities that are provided to travel along the unpolluted water. Aisling a ballad group from Wicklow provide musical entertainment on board a cabin cruiser. This was one in a series of reports examining tourism in the River Shannon region.
Pulling Up Roots (2015)
Filmed in an abandoned housing project in Western Ireland, a woman (played by Cecelia Condit) confronts lies she has been telling herself for a long time. Her self-deceptions are like weeds, which have "taken root", making her life a "ruin". In the end, she moves through despair to elation, as though one always follows the other. Music by Renato Umali.
