This week, I have for you another Classic™, disorganized media post! Lately, I’ve been able to pick up a few pieces of shorter content to feature here on the blog, but unfortunately, these tapes seem to deteriorate faster than their longer versions. Whether the reason is that most of these shorter length tapes seem to be very often recorded in LP format, or that the extra lengths of tape on full length cassettes helps protect the media from becoming oxidized, many of the tapes here have tracking and/or audio issues.
To me, though, I can’t help but to feel like this is part of the charm. Very rarely do I come across a tape that is just completely unplayable, and yet I am constantly cleaning my equipment or switching VCRs or trying new cables in order to make sure that even the dustiest tapes come across as clear as possible.
The fuzzy and jittery picture of a tape that is not quite so new anymore has an appealing aesthetic to the way it comes across on screen, and I never mind too much when tapes play like maybe they were someone’s favorite thing to watch for a long period of time.
Long-time readers will notice I recently changed my desk setup after a couple years without making any major changes. While the vision I have for my desk isn’t fully realized yet, this setup has been so much more functional and less cluttered than my previous iterations, and has made digitizing and video editing much, much easier and comfortable for me.
All the tapes in this article (and more) came from a private sale, and the owner was upfront with me, that they had been sitting in a barn for over 10 years. It’s really a miracle that any of them play at all, but then again, VHS tapes were always manufactured with durability in mind. Over a decade in the elements, and these were still enjoyable to watch. Let’s get right into the tapes!
