Late this summer, I caught the first Yer Flowers show at Club XYZ in Knoxville (see my article on the shows I attended this summer) and it was truly one of the best shows I’ve ever been to! Yer Flowers is one of David Webb’s many bands, and I’ve followed his career as a musician since I started going to shows all the way back in 2010. From Maps Need Reading to Burning Bush to Tree Tops to his newest lineup, Yer Flowers, David and all his bandmates over the years have consistently brought an immense amount of fun and talent to the scene.
I was blessed with the opportunity to work with David and his band and many friends on the cover for their newest single, “Wanna Die”. David secured access to a real casket in order to stage a fake funeral, and on a warm evening down by the creek, we set up and took these photos with the help of so many people, I really think these turned out incredible.
“Wanna Die” combines the upbeat, rhythmic stylings of some of those classic country songs that became trucker favorites with the blunt and depressing lyrics of someone who is truly at their end. Yer Flowers brings a levity and playfulness to what would otherwise be a dirge, elevating it to a real earworm that hides it’s own darkness. You can check out “Wanna Die” by Yer Flowers on Spotify right now! If you’re in East Tennessee, be on the lookout for a Yer Flowers show near you!
All photos in this article were taken by me with a Canon 5D Classic and either the Yongnuo 50mm f/1.4 or 35mm f/2 and a Moment Cinebloom 20% filter.
