a whole box full of free tapes from my favorite local thrift store
This week, fate itself has decided on the programming I have to share with y’all! I was pulling a few tapes and head cleaners off the shelves of a thrift store out on Buffalo Trail in Morristown, Tennessee, and the employee let me know that the tapes were free! On a previous occasion there, I was able to snatch up an entire box of home-recorded movies (about 40 tapes worth) for $5 and it’s been wonderful going through all that.
For this post, I have for you everything I picked up that day: A Tai Chi instructional guide for the elderly, a home video of a retirement party from 1992, more religious puppet edutainment, a basic guide to ASL, and a couple short videos from Redken and Northwestern University.
We’ve got a lot to watch so let’s get right into the tapes!
Tai Chi Healing For Seniors
1995 | Runtime: 60 Minutes
It has long been known in China that the internal energy generated by Tai Chi is good for one's health and can be used for combat purposes. What has not been emphasized until now is how effectively Tai Chi can prepare one to heal others. This video clearly establishes the relationship between Tai Chi and healing.
The first series of Chi Gung exercises in this tape were specifically designed to detoxify the body and clear out the meridian system, enabling you to heal yourself. These exercises include stimulation of the body with percussion, bone marrow washing, loosening of the joints, the 5 healing sounds and colors, and the 5 most useful acupressure points. The deep breathing techniques calm you emotionally and mentally, and the segment on quiet sitting allows your higher self to become known to you.
The next series is a brief style of Chi Gung / Tai Chi called "The Pearl of Immortality" and is accompanied by an instructional segment for easier learning. This style was chosen because it most effectively clears out the specific meridian of the body that are used in healing. This video concludes with 20 minutes of instruction in the fundamentals of Chi Gung healing with actual cases based on everyday situations.

Dr. Elaine Costello is an educator and author who has been associated with the deaf community for over 20 years. She is the former director and editor in chief of the Gallaudet College Press at Washington D.C.'s Gallaudet College, the world's only liberal arts college for the deaf. She is also the author of the Random House American Sign Language Dictionary.
